Clydebank East

Clydebank is a town in West Dunbartonshire situated on the banks of the River Clyde and is the historic heartland of the Scottish shipbuilding industry. With a population of almost 30,000 it encompasses parts of the Antonine Wall World Heritage Site and the Forth & Clyde Canal. Clydebank East was selected as a target neighbourhood because of the low canopy cover, estimated at just 7.9%.

The combination of local canopy cover and data on deprivation from the SIMD indicates that this area would be most at risk from climate events that can be mitigated by increased canopy cover.

Our aim is to plant more that 1000 trees across Clydebank East. Will you help us?

Work to date

Many areas of Clydebank lack good green infrastructure and the benefits it would bring to people and wildlife. It is the ambition of the Clyde Climate Forest project is to increase the urban canopy across the whole of Glasgow City Region to 20%.

In 2023, 520 whips (small trees) were also planted creating a new area of urban woodland. These trees were planted to the north of the Forth and Clyde Canal near Strauss Ave. The trees will have a positive impact on the urban environment by providing a cooling effect in heatwaves, carbon storage, surface water management, and a place for wildlife.

Focus on Whitecrook, Clydebank

Our ‘1000 trees’ campaign will focus on delivering neighbourhood level trees where they are most needed. Initially the project will concentrate planting in and around the streets and greenspaces in Whitecrook to the north east of the town centre.

The 2023 planting was delivered by West Dunbartonshire Environment Trust and supported by volunteers from a local primary school, nursery as well as members of the public.

2023/2024 Planting Season

This winter, in early 2024, we planted over 50 standard trees planted and 750 whips in and around Whitecrook. Volunteers from community groups, school children and residents all helped to plant the smaller trees.
