Barrhead

Barrhead sits on the edge of Gleniffer Braes in East Renfrewshire and although close to quality greenspace the area lacks good green infrastructure and the benefits it would bring to people and wildlife.

It is the ambition of the CCF project is to increase the urban across the whole of Glasgow City Region to 20%. This area of Barrhead was selected because of the low canopy cover at an estimated 16.4%.

The combination of low canopy cover and data on deprivation from the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation indicates that these areas would be most at risk from climate events that can be mitigated by increased canopy cover.

Work to date

The Clyde Climate Forest planted 24 standard trees in the beginning of 2023 across the Dunterlie area of Barrhead to increase the urban tree canopy cover. The trees will be planted along Stewart St, the green space at Waulkmill Ave and only the footpath in Dunterlie Park.

An additional 520 small trees will be planted in Dunterlie Park to increase the existing areas of urban woodland. These trees will have a positive impact on the urban environment by providing a cooling effect in heatwaves, surface water management, while providing carbon storage and wildlife habitats.

Focus on Glasgow Rd, Springwell Park and Ballantrae Road

Our ‘1000 trees’ campaign will focus on delivering neighbourhood level trees where they are most needed. Initially the project is focussing on the streets and greenspaces.
