Overview

Introduction

We have projects across the Clyde Climate Forest’s three “C’s” (Canopy, Connectivity and Carbon). These not only help local communities adapt to a changing climate, but they also increase the connectivity of habitats and nature networks and sequester carbon.

  • Canopy - increase canopy cover in vulnerable neighbourhoods

  • Connectivity - increase and enhance woodland nature networks

  • Carbon - work regionally to help achieve NetZero

 Policy Context

Policy Context

The Clyde Climate Forest helps deliver the Scottish Governments targets for tree planting.

The Clyde Climate Forest is specifically mentioned in the Implementation Plan for Scotland’s Forestry Strategy under the Priority for expanding the area of forests and woodlands, recognising wider land-use objectives and encouraging an increase in urban tree canopy cover and the development and delivery of green networks.

Targeted Approach

Any tree planting in the Glasgow City Region contributes to the Clyde Climate Forest, but our initial focus is to target specific neighbourhoods to maximise the impacts of tree planting in areas vulnerable to climate impacts.  Increased canopy cover in these areas will bring about multiple social, health, and environmental benefits.

We have also identified opportunities to create wildlife corridors and habitat stepping stones where there are gaps in provision of native broadleaved woodland. By ‘plugging the gaps’ we can enhance woodland nature networks making a more permeable landscape for species.

We are working with the eight GCR authorities to develop a regionally consistent approach to tree planting that draws on existing data and new data.  Our joined-up approach ensures we maximise opportunities to reduce our carbon footprint and contribute to the regions journey to NetZero.
