Blantyre

It is the ambition of the CCF project is to increase the urban across the whole of Glasgow City Region to 20%. This area of Blantyre was selected because of the low canopy cover at an estimated 12.6%.

The combination of low canopy cover and data on deprivation from the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation indicates that these areas would be most at risk from climate events that can be mitigated by increased canopy cover.

Work to date

CCF planted 18 standard trees at the beginning of 2023 across the Springwell area of Blantyre to increase the urban tree canopy cover. The trees were planted along Glasgow Rd to form part of the Queens Green Canopy which honours the legacy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth.

An additional 1900 small trees were planted in Springwell Park and Ballantrae Road to enhance existing and create new areas of urban woodland. These trees will have a positive impact on the urban environment by providing a cooling effect in heatwaves, carbon storage, surface water management and a place for wildlife.

Focus on Glasgow Rd, Springwell Park and Ballantrae Road

Close to 2000 trees have already been planted in Blantyre. These trees will provide more resilience to extreme weather events as well as improving local air quality and providing a place for nature.

The Clyde Climate Forest team carried out the initial plantings in early 2023 and were assisted by:

● High Blantyre Primary School

● Ahmaddiya Muslim women association - Baitur Rahman Mosque Glasgow

● Local residents

2023/2024 Planting Season

This winter, we planted trees in Blantyre, concentrating our efforts in the Springwell area. There were approx. 250 whips, a number of standard trees, and a community orchard planted in this area.

Volunteers helped to plant the whips, this included community groups, school children and residents.
