Target across City Region: 20%

Blantyre

Blantyre is a large town in South Lanarkshire, situated south of the River Clyde, neighbouring the much larger town of Hamilton to the west. The town was selected as a target neighbourhood due to having low levels of canopy cover at 12.6%

It is the ambition of the CCF project is to increase the urban across the whole of Glasgow City Region to 20%. To date, a whopping 4235 whips (small trees) and 60 standards (large trees), have been planted across Blantyre. Further detail can be found below.

Work to date

CCF planted 18 standard trees at the beginning of 2023 across the Springwell area of Blantyre. The trees were planted along Glasgow Rd to form part of the Queens Green Canopy which honours the legacy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth. 1875 whips were also planted in Springwell Park and Ballantrae Road to enhance existing and create new areas of urban woodland. An additional 250 whips were planted, north of Springwell Park with High Blantyre Primary School and South Lanarkshire Council planted 32 standard trees.

By 2024, a further 1400 trees were planted with Graham’s corporate group and CCF tree warden volunteers at Springwell Park. In 2025, a further 750 whip trees were planted across Blantyre, 130 trees planted by the CCF team and Tree Wardens in an open patch of greenspaces behind Kirkwall Avenue that expands on an ancient Riparian Woodland network. There were 350 trees planted at Hunthill Lane, which was a brand-new pocket of woodland beside a disused red ash pitch. Lastly 270 trees were planted by our dedicated Tree Wardens and we were joined by Lanarkshire Climate Action Hub at Lochalsh Place, just a walk away from our site behind Kirkwall Avenue to expand that network of Riparian Woodland.

1000 Trees Campaign

Our ‘1000 trees’ campaign has focussed on delivering neighbourhood level trees where they are most needed.

In Blantyre, we have smashed our '1000 trees' goal by planting 4235 whips and 60 standards. These trees will have a positive impact on the urban environment by providing a cooling effect in heatwaves, carbon storage, surface water management, and a place for wildlife.
