Location: North Lanarkshire

Tree Canopy Cover: 10.6%

Target Canopy Cover across GCR: 20%

Central Wishaw

Wishaw is a large town in North Lanarkshire, which is the fourth largest local authority in Scotland by population, it lies on the edge of the Clyde Valley, 15 miles (24 km) south-east of Glasgow city centre with a population of more than 30,000.

It was selected as a target neighbourhood because of the low level of canopy cover, across Glasgow City Region, it is the ambition of the Clyde Climate Forest is to increase the urban canopy cover to 20%.

Across Wishaw, a total of 45 standards (large trees) and 2390 whips (small trees) have been planted in to date. Full details can be found below.

Work to date

In 2024, pupils from St Ignatius Primary School, Greenhead Moss Volunteer Group and Trees for Cities – Youth Programme planted 500 whips on Creamery Road. A further 12 Standards were planted by North Lanarkshire Council later that season.

By the 2025/26 season, there was a massive effort by the CCF team and local authority to get Central Wishaw to meet the 1000 tree campaign target. There were a total of 1890 whips planted by CCF Tree Wardens, the public and NatWest staff across the Pather community. Expanding on a stretch of existing woodland along the Wishaw train station line and creating new pockets of woodland in and around the encompassing housing. 33 Standards were also planted by the council in 2025 / 2026.

Therefore, a total of 45 standards and 2390 whips have been planted in Central Wishaw to date.

1000 trees campaign

We are delighted that we successfully planted a huge 2,390 whips (small trees) and 45 standards (large trees) to date across Central Wishaw, these trees will have a positive impact on the urban environment and a place for wildlife to thrive.

It was our ambition to plant up to '1000 trees' as the combination of low canopy cover and data on deprivation from the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation indicated that these areas would be most at risk from climate events that can be mitigated by increased canopy cover.

Over the coming months we will be continuing to plant across the Region to meet our goals across all target neighbourhoods.
