Bellshill

Bellshill is a town in North Lanarkshire built on coal and iron, but now it is a growing modern town of almost 20,000 people. Bellshill was selected because of the low canopy cover at an estimated 10.2%.

The combination of low canopy cover and data on deprivation from the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation indicates that these areas would be most at risk from climate events that can be mitigated by increased canopy cover.

Our aim is to plant more than 1000 trees across Bellshill. Will you help us?

Work to date

Many areas of Bellshill lack good green infrastructure and the benefits it would bring to people and wildlife. It is the ambition of the Clyde Climate Forest project is to increase the urban canopy across the whole of Glasgow City Region to 20%.

CCF planted 33 standard trees at the beginning of 2023 across the Hattonrigg area of Bellshill to increase the urban tree canopy cover. An additional 400 small trees were also planted creating a new area of urban woodland. These trees will have a positive impact on the urban environment by providing a cooling effect in heatwaves, carbon storage, surface water management, and a place for wildlife.

Focus on Hattonrigg, Bellshill

Our ‘1000 trees’ campaign will focus on delivering neighbourhood level trees where they are most needed. Initially the project has concentrated planting in and around the streets and greenspaces adjacent Noble and St Gerard’s Primary Schools to the north of the town centre.

In 2023, the Clyde Climate Forest team planted more than 400 trees and were assisted by:

● North Lanarkshire Community Learning and Development volunteers

● VINCI corporate volunteers

2023/2024 Planting Season

This winter, we continued to plant trees in Bellshill, concentrating our efforts around Rockburn Park with approximately 750 whips planted.

Volunteers helped plant the whips which included community groups, school children and residents.
