Central Greenock

Greenock is a historic industrial town on the southern short of the Firth of Clyde, 25 miles west of Glasgow. Despite the decline of the town’s traditional heavy industries, Greenock remains Scotland’s chief west-coast container port, and it is now the site of a prominent cruise-ship terminal.

Central Greenock was selected as a target neighbourhood because of the low canopy cover, estimated at just 11.3%.

The combination of local canopy cover and data on deprivation from the SIMD indicates that this area would be most at risk from climate events that can be mitigated by increased canopy cover.

Our aim is to plant more than 1000 trees in Central Greenock. Will you help us?

Work to date

Many areas of Greenock lack good green infrastructure and the benefits it would bring to people and wildlife. It is the ambition of the Clyde Climate Forest project is to increase the urban canopy across the whole of Glasgow City Region to 20%.

In 2023 Inverclyde Council planted many standard trees in many of their parks and greenspaces, in support of the Clyde Climate Forest. These trees will have a positive impact on the urban environment by providing a cooling effect in heatwaves, carbon storage, surface water management, and a place for wildlife.

Focus on Central Greenock

Our ‘1000 trees’ campaign will focus on delivering neighbourhood level trees where they are most needed. Initially the project will concentrate planting in and around the streets and greenspaces in the centre of Greenock.

2023/2024 Planting Season

This year, we planted 60 standard trees in and around central Greenock. Unfortunately because of the size of the trees and the planting locations, these were planted by contractors with limited opportunity for volunteering.
