Possilpark is an area of Glasgow, situated north of the River Clyde. The area developed around the Saracen Foundry of Walter MacFarlane & Co Ltd, which was the main employer until it’s closure in 1967. An area of heavy industry, Possilpark went into decline in the last half of the 20th century and the effects of this de-industrialisation can still be felt today.
This year 40 whips were planted by local volunteers in Cowlairs as part of the Sharing Cowlairs project. A further 30 standards will be planted to create an avenue of trees along Stoneyhurst Street and Kinbuck Street leading from the primary school to Cowlairs Park itself.
These trees will help improve health and well-being, improving air quality and allowing people to engage with nature.
Our ‘1000 trees’ campaign will focus on delivering neighbourhood level trees where they are most needed. Initially the project has focused on Cowlairs Park, but we hope to extend this across Possilpark to other areas already identified by Glasgow City Council in their Tree Plan.
We hope to have more planting events to show here later in 2024, when the new planting season begins in October.
